What are the challenges faced by female employees when they
are in their middle management roles?
The outcomes of the above question have led to the following
conclusions at a broad level. These are not restricted to just female
employees, but to most of the employees in the middle management level. The
outcomes are based on the responses received from some of you and a mirror of
our experiences thus far.
Re-skill Self
By the virtue of the good performance in the past, the
employees are promoted or moved to high level in the chain. However, most of
the times, handling self in the middle management levels becomes a challenge if
they are asked to handle a different domain, technology etc., It calls for
re-skilling or upgrading the skills as required. Every time the management
framework or the concepts cannot be applied to the new domains or technologies
that the new manager has not worked for in the past. Organizations have indeed
a career plan for the middle management teams, but this training or re-skilling
or upgrade, happens at a predefined frequency or is not at disposal of the
employee. To resolve this, the best means is to keep track of the new trends in
industry and the organization road map and setup a career plan for self and
work towards it, as it will avoid some of the surprises in the middle
management level and related challenges.
Work Environment
Women leadership have to compete with male counterparts
equally to sustain in any Organization. Tight competition and the cycle of
survival of the fittest prevails. Professional rivalry dominates and leads to
unhealthy competition. Senior management expectations augments leading to high
work accountability. The constant anxiety surrounding job security prevails.
Employees should understand that moving to middle management roles comes with
some cost. Due to prevailing issues around voluntary and in-voluntary
retirement and retrenchment, it is advisable for every employee to start working
on alternate career options, business opportunities or the like.
Handling diverse projects and teams
An individual contributor, gets promoted to next level and
by Organization mandate is asked to handle a team with diverse projects or
teams, here comes the challenge. This challenge is just not restricted to the
individual contributor, but to anyone who has not handled diverse aspects in
the past. Diverse projects and teams are becoming the need of the hour and the
capability of the manager is at stake, if they fail to handle this situation.
Projects can be diverse on technology front, teams can be diverse on gender,
location and skill. The best means to address this is identify the high
performers in the team, define a proper team structure, delegate and monitor
the work progress on a daily basis. Identify the technology, people and any
other risks or issues that is / are the impediments and report the status to
senior management on a frequent basis. This is an art by itself and will take
form in due course.
Work Life Balance
We are not born in a circus to balance everything around us.
The most talked about topic in today's era is the imbalances in Work-life. The
middle management and above levels in the Organizations, call for augmented
attention for the association of the employee with work and company's
direction. This draws undue attention towards the current association with the
company. Many other things go into imbalance mode like personal life, health,
planning for next career, re-skilling., The good means to create an associated
balance with everything cannot be attained at one time. Hence derive the
priorities on everything and work out a plan as to which one would be of higher
order and implement it. Keep checking this plan, re-prioritize at least every 3
months and move forward. Assign, short- and long-term goals and align self
towards them.

Work-Life Balance - Part 2 - How to identify the imbalances
Here are few things to keep in mind to identify the imbalances in work and life.
- Do you know when you are under stress, if not identical to see if you are happy and contented with everything around you
- Are the stress levels too high and not making you focus on your goals
- Are there any health issues due to which the concentration levels are dipping
- Is there a repetitive/constant problem that is compounding and bringing your morale and energies down?
- At the moment in your life is your focus area on Work or life, which one is very important for you right now
- Did you prepare a backup plan for someone to take some load of your responsibilities at work or at home in your absence
- How good are your personal relationships with your family and close friends and relatives
- Do you want to handle all the responsibilities everywhere by yourselves for the fear of losing to others
If the answer to any of the 5 questions above is yes then there is definitely an imbalance between your work-life.
What you need to do to identify when the imbalance is occurring
- Start to learn to delegate work/responsibilities to your people around
- Build a friendly and hassle-free environment
- Accept the heaps and valleys in personal and professional life as it is
- When you are not able to meet the short-term targets due to impediments, understand that there is an imbalance somewhere
- How far have you come with your life goals, if not very close to achieving the goals, there is some issue somewhere
- If any of the two things (Health, Wealth, Work and Life) of the four is impacted, then there is a direct impact everywhere
- When your sleep is disturbed due to any compounding issues, this is an indicator that something is going wrong

Work-Life Balance
Work-Life Balance (WFB) is considered a phenomenon which is predominant in the current age. The expectations of the society and the culture of a global civilization have made many fold changes to the human life. Predominantly what has changed very drastically is our routine and priorities in life.
Here are few things to ponder on the work-life balance and to see what can be done to have a proper work-life balance.
First of all the 3 terms work, life and balance have to be understood in the right sense. Work relates to those activities that help us earn an income (eg: Career, Dream Projects etc), life in this context is not restricted to 'personal life', it refers to everything like family, inner self, personal aspirations and goals etc, and balance actually does not refer to a perfect balance 50-50 here. Balance is mostly misunderstood as managing both work and life at the same time. In our world, there is no perfect balance as such, so let us understand balance in the context of not overloading work and life with either of these at the same time. Hope this helps!.
Lets now look at few aspects that one has to nail down for a good work-life balance
Understand where the gap is, is it work or life?
The first thing one should do is to introspect and see which of the work or the life is dominating the other. Which is the one which is getting beaten to death? What are the situations where this balance is missing? What are the stress levels due to this imbalance? Is it due to too much work pressure that you are not able to spend healthy time in your life. Is it due to some issues on the personal front that is impacting your work too!. Identify the cause and the gap. Introspect!.
Once the gap is identified, analyze the causes for the gap. Have a discussion with your near and dear ones very openly and see if they can help you identify the gap. The discussion always helps.
Unwind
It is imperative that due to growing needs of the society and for the betterment of a comfortable lifestyle, both the life partners decide to work. It's part of the planning for the life. However, when stress gets over us, it impacts the balance. Learn to unwind, unplug from work when you are at home and vice-versa. Don't bring work home. Don't carry mobiles, laptops, tabs etc to places where your near and dear ones are there (home, play area etc). Don't discuss the office work at home with anyone, unless their decisions are required to be made for your work-related things. One more thing is to avoid working late long hours as well.
Define the boundaries of work and life
Sometimes situations demand us to work from home for a couple of days/weeks or for a couple of hours for a long duration of time. Likewise, at work, there could be some urgent issues related to the personal life that needs to be addressed. Define the boundaries of both work and personal life. How of much of each can you permit to influence your time when you are with the other.
For eg: How many phone calls/msgs from near or dear ones you would like to take in a busy day at work. What are the alternative arrangements that you can do at home so that your family doesn't need your support when you are at work? What is the kind of work items that you would like to do from home related to your work so that your family is not impacted etc.,
Healthy life and workouts
The most important one in the work-life balancing act is to maintain good health. Ensure to take the help of your colleagues, friends and everyone around you and inspire them to lead a stress-free life. These days there are many ways and means to adopt for a healthy life
WFB doesn't necessarily mean Working from home! and neither it means to balance stuff while you are in service alone. WFB is a cycle and what changes is the nature of your job or career or personal life, but what shouldn't change is the attitude to manage both properly!. Good Luck!.

How to make friends at work
Often we make a decision to join new teams at work or outside work. One thing that we should remember is that we should last long in the group, which means one should know how to be part of the group and get going :) .... however, more so we tend to lose connections with people.
Well here are few things that you should do to make friends at work, keep reading the following
1) Dress Well
2) Greet everyone every day, a smile doesn't harm you, but you will gain in the near future
3) Understand the dynamics of the group, how diverse is the group in terms of nativity, gender, culture, technical skills etc.,
4) Be a part of the group, be like them, be a Roman in Rome
5) Connect with the group outside work area as well, personal bonding helps improve relationships
6) Do speak and create positive vibes when you are in the group, speak up for yourself and ensure you are heard
7) Speak to each person in the group separately, have a personal connection with everyone face to face, if you are working in a team where few of them are virtual, then these members have to be contacted first every day, remember you are new to the group and they are not!
8) Keep assessing your self and see if you are fitting the group, do this every day
9) People like to eat and move along...try getting some good food items and share it with all
10) Protect the group when someone is coming back at them
11) Speak the same language, suggestions or feedback about anything on this group to anyone and say positive things only
12) Create a group chat or wapp groups etc to keep the interest of the group going and to get connected well
